Biography :
Robert O’Brien is LIUNA / Mancinelli Professor of Global Labour Issues and chair of the Department of Political Science at McMaster University in Canada. He is editor of Solidarity First : Canadian Workers and Social Cohesion (UBC Press 2008). In 2004, he has co-published Global Political Economy : Evolution and Dynamics, with Palgrave Macmillan edition. In 2002, he was the co-authored of the book Global Unions ?, He is presently leading a team research project on Canadian Workers and Social Cohesion in a Global Era.
Title and summary of the communication :
“No Safe Havens : Globalization, Regionalism and Labour.”
This paper argues that for labour regional integration has not acted as a safe haven against the forces of globalization. The same forces that drive globalization influence the regional integration project in many parts of the world. Drawing upon case studies from several regions the paper serves as a critique of those putting faith in regions as an arena that can mitigate the forces of the global economy.
